Two ways we do it
We take them along
Pushing a cart is exercise, choosing food is independence, and the store is a change of scenery. When your loved one feels up to it, we drive them, walk with them, reach the high shelves, and handle the bags.
We go for them
When the weather is bad or energy is low, we take the list and shop while they rest. Everything gets put away in the right cupboard.
What we handle
- Building a list from what is actually missing
- Checking the fridge and pantry first
- Shopping the stores they prefer
- Following doctor guidance on food when that applies
- Watching for sales and using coupons if they like
- Carrying bags in and putting food away
- Clearing out expired items
- Pharmacy and other stops on the same trip
Why an empty fridge matters
When you visit your parent, look in the refrigerator before you look anywhere else. An empty fridge, or one full of expired food, tells you more about how they are doing than any conversation will. It is one of the clearest signs a parent needs help at home.
Groceries and meals together
Buying the food is half the job. Many families pair shopping with meal preparation so the groceries actually become meals instead of sitting in the fridge.
